So, one thing in canon that irked me was that there's never really any advising or group discussion that goes into things. The leader just decides something, /maybe/ with the input of the medicine cat or some other random faces, and they all jump to it.
That doesn't sound terrible good to me. Now, certainly different clans might have different levels of group input... That's what this thread is here to discuss. I've got a couple ideas of my own I've implemented among my own clans:
1. Elders Advising
So, with this, the elder body, with its greater experience and wisdom (and the potential of having served under more than one leader/deputy) advises the leader on diferent actions. They may also vote to appoint deputies or choose deputy candidates.
2. Queen Advising
So, the queens have huge input with the leader on advising about each kit's learning style, needs, personality, and the like, and they work with the leader to help ensure each kit gets the right mentor for them.
3. Nine
Now, this one's more complex; I've only put it into one of my clans (which /still/ needs a name).
So, basically, there are nine important positions within the clan, and whenever a Big Decision must be made, all nine come together and discuss it from their varying viewpoints. Majorty vote rules. Position-wise, there is:
The Leader, who is the head of the clan.
The Successor, who is the 'apprentice' of the leader and learning to govern, along with weighing in their opinions on things.
The Keeper, who is charged with keeping track of rules, laws, codes, amendments, history, and the like.
The Seer, who receives signs from the spirits and interprets them and gets advice from beyond.
The Healer, who is in charge of keeping up the physical, emotional, and mental health of the clan.
The Watcher, who is the head Battler (cats that primarily fight/patrol/defend) and is elected by the battlers as a whole, along with the leader and elders.
The Patroller, who is the head Hunter (cats that primarily scout and hunt for the clan) and is elected by the hunters/leader/elders.
The Head Minder, the most experienced and respected queen.
The Head Elder, the elder considered most wise and elected by the elders.
This also ties into the idea of 9 lives and 9 different perspectives among the clan; each leader has nine other spiritual cats (one leader, one successor, one keeper, one seer, one healer, one battler/hunter, one apprentice/kit, one elder, and one queen to advise them as well).
4. Everyone votes.
Among one of my clans, Ashclan, the very biggest decisions, everyone gets to vote on, and the Dreamer (their leader) will rule the majority wins. On smaller decisions, everyone gets to present their case to the Dreamer, who makes the ultimate decision.
This is what I have so far... Anyone else have thoughts regarding kitty democracy and the like for their worlds?
